Globlization And Its Impact Of Insurance Industry In India

INTRODUCTION

1 2 Impact

The word "Fear" has only four alphabets like love but both of them have very different e meaning. Whatever man (malor female) does for the love of their families always starts with the background of fear. Generally so many times we have been asking our selves that, what will happen if we were not there, but we keep on asking rather then doing something for it. Time is precious, it never stops for any one and we are living in the world of uncertainty; the uncertainty of job, the uncertainty of money, the uncertainty of property and like this the story goes continuous for the whole life of a man.

1 2 Impact

A thriving insurance sector is of vital importance to every modern economy. Firstly because it encourages the habit of saving, secondly because it provides a safety net to rural and urban enterprises and productive individuals. And perhaps most importantly it generates long- term invisible funds for infrastructure building. The nature of the insurance business is such that the cash inflow of insurance companies is constant while the payout is deferred and contingency related.

This characteristic feature of their business makes insurance companies the biggest investors in long-gestation infrastructure development projects in all developed and aspiring nations. This is the most compelling reason why private sector (and foreign) companies, which will spread the insurance habit in the societal and consumer interest are urgently required in this vital sector of the economy. Opening up of insurance to private sector including foreign participation has resulted into various opportunities and challenges in India.

LIFE INSURANCE MARKET

The Life Insurance market in India is an underdeveloped market that was only tapped by the state owned LIC till the entry of private insurers. The penetration of life insurance products was 19 percent of the total 400 million of the insurable population. The state owned LIC sold insurance as a tax instrument, not as a product giving protection. Most customers were under- insured with no flexibility or transparency in the products. With the entry of the private insurers the rules of the game have changed.

The 12 private insurers in the life insurance market have already grabbed nearly 9 percent of the market in terms of premium income. The new business premium of the 12 private players has tripled to Rs 1000 crore in 2002- 03 over last year. Meanwhile, with regard to state owned LIC's new premium business has fallen.

Innovative products, smart marketing and aggressive distribution. That's the triple whammy combination that has enabled fledgling private insurance companies to sign up Indian customers faster than anyone ever expected. Indians, who have always seen life insurance as a tax saving device, are now suddenly turning to the private sector and snapping up the new innovative products on offer.

The growing popularity of the private insurers is evidenced in other ways. They are coining money in new niches that they have introduced. The state owned companies still dominate segments like endowments and money back policies. But in the annuity or pension products business, the private insurers have already wrested over 33 percent of the market. And in the popular unit-linked insurance schemes they have a virtual monopoly, with over 90 percent of the customers.
The private insurers also seem to be scoring big in other ways- they are persuading people to take out bigger policies. For instance, the average size of a life insurance policy before privatization was around Rs 50,000. That has risen to about Rs 80,000. But the private insurers are ahead in this game and the average size of their policies is around Rs 1.1 lakh to Rs 1.2 lakh- way bigger than the industry average.

Buoyed by their quicker than expected success, nearly all private insurers are fast- forwarding the second phase of their expansion plans. No doubt the aggressive stance of private insurers is already paying rich dividends. But a rejuvenated LIC is also trying to fight back to woo new customers.

INSURANCE TODAY

In 1993, Malhotra Committee, headed by former Finance Secretary and RBI Governor R. N. Malhotra, was formed to evaluate the Indian insurance industry and recommend its future direction. The Malhotra committee was set up with the objective of complementing the reforms initiated in the financial sector.

With the setup of Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA) the reforms started in the Insurance sector. It has became necessary as if we compare our Insurance penetration and per capita premium we are much behind then the rest of the world. The table above gives the statistics for the year 2000.

With the expected increase in per capita income to 6% for the next 10 year and with the improvement in the awareness levels the demand for insurance is expected to grow.
As per an independent consultancy company, Monitor Group has estimated a growth form Rs. 218 Billion to Rs. 1003 Billion by 2008. The estimations seems achievable as the performance of 13 life Insurance players in India for the year 2002-2003 (up to October, based on the first year premium) is Rs. 66.683 million being LIC the biggest contributor with Rs. 59,187 million. As of now LIC has 2050 branches in 7 zones with strong team of 5,60,000 agents.

IMPACT OF GLOBALISATION

While nationalized insurance companies have done a commendable job in extending the volume of the business, opening up insurance sector to private players was a necessity in the context of globalization of financial sector. If traditional infrastructural and semipublic goods industries such as banking, airlines, telecom, power etc., have significant private sector presence, continuing a state of monopoly in provision of insurance was indefensible and therefore, the globalization of insurance has been done as discussed earlier. Its impact has to be seen in the form of creating various opportunities and challenges.

The introduction of private players in the industry has added colours to the dull industry. The initiatives taken by the private players are very competitive and have given immense competition to the on time monopoly of the market LIC. Since the advent of the private players in the market the industry has seen new and innovative steps taken by the players in the sector. The new players have improved the service quality of the insurance. As a result LIC down the years have seen the declining in its career. The market share was distributed among the private players. Though LIC still holds 75% of the insurance sector the upcoming nature of these private players are enough to give more competition to LIC in the near future. LIC market share has decreased from 95%(2002-03) to 81% (2004-05). The following company holds the rest of the market share of the insurance industry.

PRESENT SCENARIO OF GLOBALISATION

In a tough battle to expand market shares the private sector life insurance industry consisting of 14 life insurance companies at 26% have lost 3% of market share to the state owned Life Insurance Corporation(LIC) in the domestic life insurance industry in 2006-07. According to the figures released by Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority, the total premium of these 14 companies have shot up by 90% to Rs 19,471.83 crore in 2006-07 from Rs 10, 252 crore.

LIC with a total premium mobilisation of Rs 55,934 crore has been able to retain a market share of 74.26 % during the reporting period. In total the life insurance industry in first year premium has grown by 110% to Rs 75, 406 crore during 2006-07. The 2006-07 performance has thrown a few surprises in the ranking among the private sector life insurance companies. New entrants like Reliance Life and SBI Life had shown a huge growth of over 381% and 210% respectively during the year. Reliance Life which has become one of the top five companies ended the year with a premium of Rs 930 crore during the year.

Though ICICI Prudential Life Insurance remained as the No 1 private sector life insurance company during the year. Bajaj Allianz overtook ICICI Prudential in terms of monthly market share in March, for the first time ever. Bajaj's market share among private players in non-single premium for March stood at 29.1% vs. ICICI Prudential's 23.8%. Bajaj gained 4.6 percentage point market share among private sector players for FY07.

Among other private players, SBI Life and Reliance Life continued to do well, each gaining 4% market share in FY07. SBI Life's growth was driven by increasing contribution from ULIP premiums. Another notable developments of the 2006-07 performance has been the expansion of retail markets by the life insurance comapnies. Bajaj Alliannz Life insurance has added 20 lakh policies while ICICI Prudential has expanded over 19 lakh policies during the year.

With the largest number of life insurance policies in force in the world, Insurance happens to be a mega opportunity in India. It's a business growing at the rate of 15-20 per cent annually and presently is of the order of Rs 450 billion. Together with banking services, it adds about 7 per cent to the country's GDP. Gross premium collection is nearly 2 per cent of GDP and funds available with LIC for investments are 8 per cent of GDP.

Yet, nearly 80 per cent of Indian population is without life insurance cover while health insurance and non-life insurance continues to be below international standards. And this part of the population is also subject to weak social security and pension systems with hardly any old age income security. This itself is an indicator that growth potential for the insurance sector is immense.

A well-developed and evolved insurance sector is needed for economic development as it provides long term funds for infrastructure development and at the same time strengthens the risk taking ability. It is estimated that over the next ten years India would require investments of the order of one trillion US dollar. The Insurance sector, to some extent, can enable investments in infrastructure development to sustain economic growth of the country.

Insurance is a federal subject in India. There are two legislations that govern the sector- The Insurance Act- 1938 and the IRDA Act- 1999. The insurance sector in India has become a full circle from being an open competitive market to nationalisation and back to a liberalised market again. Tracing the developments in the Indian insurance sector reveals the 360 degree turn witnessed over a period of almost two centuries.

Important milestones in the life insurance business in India

1912: The Indian Life Assurance Companies Act enacted as the first statute to regulate the life insurance business.

1928: The Indian Insurance Companies Act enacted to enable the government to collect statistical information about both life and non-life insurance businesses.

1938: Earlier legislation consolidated and amended to by the Insurance Act with the objective of protecting the interests of the insuring public.

1956: 245 Indian and foreign insurers and provident societies taken over by the central government and nationalised. LIC formed by an Act of Parliament- LIC Act 1956- with a capital contribution of Rs. 5 crore from the Government of India.

OPPORTUNITES

- A state monopoly has little incentive to innovative or offers a wide range of products. It can be seen by a lack of certain products from LIC's portfolio and lack of extensive risk categorization in several GIC products such as health insurance. More competition in this business will spur firms to offer several new products and more complex and extensive risk categorization.

- It would also result in better customer services and help improve the variety and price of insurance products.

- The entry of new players would speed up the spread of both life and general insurance. Spread of insurance will be measured in terms of insurance penetration and measure of density.

- With the entry of private players, it is expected that insurance business roughly 400 billion rupees per year now, more than 20 per cent per year even leaving aside the relatively under developed sectors of health insurance, pen More importantly, it will also ensure a great mobalisation of funds that can be utilized for purpose of infrastructure development that was a factor considered for globalisation of insurance.

- More importantly, it will also ensure a great moblisation of funds that can be utilized for purpose of infrastructure development that was a factor considered for globalisation of insurance.

- With allowing of holding of equity shares by foreign company either itself or through its subsidiary company or nominee not exceeding 26% of paid up capital of Indian partners will be operated resulting into supplementing domestic savings and increasing economic progress of nation. Agreements of various ventures have already been made to be discussed later on in this paper.

- It has been estimated that insurance sector growth more than 3 times the growth of economy in India. So business or domestic firms will attempt to invest in insurance sector. Moreover, growth of insurance business in India is 13 times the growth insurance in developed countries. So it is natural, that foreign companies would be fostering a very strong desire to invest something in Indian insurance business.

- Most important not the least tremendous employment opportunities will be created in the field of insurance which is burning problem of the present day today issues.

CHALLENGES BEFORE THE INDUSTRY

New age companies have started their business as discussed earlier. Some of these companies have been able to float 3 or 4 products only and some have targeted to achieve the level of 8 or 10 products. At present, these companies are not in a position to pose any challenge to LIC and all other four companies operating in general insurance sector, but if we see the quality and standards of the products which they issued, they can certainly be a challenge in future. Because the challenge in the entire environment caused by globalisation and liberalization the industry is facing the following challenges.

- The existing insurer, LIC and GIC, have created a large group of dissatisfied customers due to the poor quality of service. Hence there will be shift of large number of customers from LIC and GIC to the private insurers.

- LIC may face problem of surrender of a large number of policies, as new insurers will woo them by offer of innovative products at lower prices.

- The corporate clients under group schemes and salary savings schemes may shift their loyalty from LIC to the private insurers.

- There is a likelihood of exit of young dynamic managers from LIC to the private insurer, as they will get higher package of remuneration.

- LIC has overstaffing and with the introduction of full computerization, a large number of the employees will be surplus. However they cannot be retrenched. Hence the operating costs of LIC will not be reduced. This will be a disadvantage in the competitive market, as the new insurers will operate with lean office and high technology to reduce the operating costs.

- GIC and its four subsidiary companies are going to face more challenges, because their management expenses are very high due to surplus staff. They can't reduce their number due to service rules.

- Management of claims will put strain on the financial resources, GIC and its subsidiaries since it is not up the mark.

- LIC has more than to 60 products and GLC has more than 180 products in their kitty, which are outdated in the present context as they are not suitable to the changing needs of the customers. Not only that they are not competent enough to complete with the new products offered by foreign companies in the market.

- Reaching the consumer expectations on par with foreign companies such as better yield and much improved quality of service particularly in the area of settlement of claims, issue of new policies, transfer of the policies and revival of policies in the liberalized market is very difficult to LIC and GIC.

- Intense competition from new insurers in winning the consumers by multi-distribution channels, which will include agents, brokers, corporate intermediaries, bank branches, affinity groups and direct marketing through telesales and interest.

- The market very soon will be flooded by a large number of products by fairly large number of insurers operating in the Indian market. Even with limited range of products offered by LIC and GIC, the consumers are confused in the market. Their confusion will further increase in the face for large number of products in the market. The existing level of awareness of the consumers for insurance products is very low. It is so because only 62% of the Indian population is literate and less than 10% educated. Even the educated consumers are ignorant about the various products of the insurance.

- The insurers will have to face an acute problem of the redressal of the consumers, grievances for deficiency in products and services.

- Increasing awareness will bring number of legal cases filled by the consumers against insurers is likely to increase substantially in future.

- Major challenges in canalizing the growth of insurance sector are product innovation, distribution network, investment management, customer service and education.

ESSENTIALS TO MEET THE CHALLENGES

- Indian insurance industry needs the following to meet the global challenges

- Understanding the customer better will enable insurance companies to design appropriate products, determine price correctly and increase profitability.

- Selection of right type of distribution channel mix along with prudent and efficient FOS [Fleet On Street] management.

- An efficient CRM system, which would eventually create sustainable competitive advantages and build a long-lasting relationship

- Insurers must follow best investment practices and must have a strong asset management company to maximize returns.

- Insurers should increase the customer base in semi urban and rural areas, which offer a huge potential.

- Promoting health insurance and using e-broking to increase the business.

CONCLUSION

Thus, in the last on basis of above the discussion we can conclude that need for private sector entry is justifiable on the basis of enhancing the efficiency of operation, achieving greater density and insurance coverage in the country and for greater mobilization of long-term savings for long gestation infrastructure projects. In the wake of such competition it is essential for the government monopolies (LIC and GIC) that they quickly up grade their technology, restructure themselves on more efficient lines and operate as broad run enterprise. New players should not be treated as rivalries to government companies, but they can supplement in achieving the objective of growth of insurance business in India.

Security Impact of the Internet

Introduction

1 2 Impact

The Internet has become a vital resource for many companies around the world. By connecting to the Internet, a company can share information, send and receive files and email, and provide an online shopping experience to the company's customers. Some might say that in order for businesses to "keep up in the global marketplace" (Wienclaw, 2008, p. 1) they must be connected to the Internet. In this paper I will show some of the security risks that have been introduced or increased with the Internet and I will attempt to provide some suggestions for mitigating these risks.

1 2 Impact

Security impact of the Internet

One of the most significant risks that companies face is the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive information. This risk isn't new to companies, but with the Internet this risk has been increased. According to Dictionary.com, hackers are defined as "a microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems" (dictionary.com, 2009). Prior to the Internet, hackers would have to gain access to a company's computer system from within the company premises. Companies could mitigate this risk with physical security mechanisms such as access cards and guards. The Internet has opened up this risk to hackers outside the company as well. Unauthorized access can lead to regulatory problems for companies as well as intellectual property theft. The embarrassment to the company can also jeopardize customer confidence which could result in losing sales. According to Linda Musthaler, some "organizations that have experienced data breaches have been forced by law to report the occurrence" (2008, para. 1).

There was a time when software patches were just required to repair functionality of the software. Now that companies are connected to the Internet, security vulnerabilities that are inherent in software also must be patched. The Internet is an extraordinary communications vehicle. Just like companies use the Internet to find and communicate the latest information, hackers use this vehicle as well. According to Ruth Wienclaw, "research has found that the average time between the announcement of a software vulnerability to the time that attack is made on that vulnerability is 5.8 days" (Wienclaw, 2008, p.2). More recently, in October of 2008 "Microsoft has released a fix outside of its normal Patch Tuesday cycle" (Johnston, 2009, para. 2). This emergency patch was released because "targeted attacks exploited" (2009, para. 1) the vulnerability according to Stuart Johnston.

Computer viruses were not new to the computing world when the Internet was introduced. Computer viruses are software programs that are designed to harm a computer environment and spread from computer to computer. Before the Internet, computer viruses would spread by sharing disks from one computer to another. What better way to enhance the spreading of computer viruses than to connect all the computers to each other.

Recommended Solutions

Many solutions can be implemented to minimize the risks that have been mentioned above. An important thing to mention though is that a company might not be able to eliminate all risks. The first recommendation that I would make for any company that is trying to implement an Internet Security program is to try to understand the assets the company is protecting. Assets could be physical assets, but here I am referring to data assets. The impact of the risk to those assets is important to understand in terms of cost. This is a common risk management approach. If the company doesn't understand the risk in terms of cost, it may be difficult to justify the cost of mitigating the risk. The second most important recommendation that I would give is that no one solution will mitigate all the risks. According to Roark Pollock, "to effectively protect against attacks spawned by worms, hackers, and other forms of malware that target software vulnerabilities, enterprises should consider a 'layered' security approach" (2004, para. 6).

Most experts agree that implementing an Antivirus/Antimalware solution as well as a hardware based firewall is the basic building blocks for Internet Security. An antimalware solution will continually scan the computers and servers in the company's environment to identify and block attempted spreading from viruses, spyware, and other malicious code. Firewalls on the other hand, will help prevent unauthorized computers from gaining access into the company's networks, helping to prevent a hacker from gaining access.

Firewalls and Antimalware solutions are not free from vulnerabilities themselves. These products have software code that is susceptible to security breaches and new malware where malware definition files have yet to be updated. This is why I believe that a comprehensive patch management practice is implemented as part of the Internet Security solution. According to Linda Musthaler, "eighteen percent of hacks exploited a specific known vulnerability. In more than 71% of these cases, a patch for the vulnerability had been available for months" (2008, para. 4). One of the best investments a company can make, in my mind, is an automated patch management solution where known security patches are automatically downloaded and deployed to the appropriate devices as soon as the patch is released. At Interval International, my team has signed up for a third party notification service that provides us with immediate notification of security patch releases and scores the releases on a scale of one to five. A score of one is the least important to implement and a five is the most critical. In my department I have established guidelines around how fast a patch must be deployed based on the score provided. Our patch management product allows us to deploy patches rated a five within one day to all our systems globally.

Since remote login or remote access is a common requirement for companies that have Internet access, a two factor authentication solution is another important recommendation. Where a firewall will help ensure that only authorized systems will have access to the company's internal resources, an authentication system will ensure only authorized users have access. Two factor authentication forces the user to enter a password based on a password policy set by the company. It also forces the user to provide another credential based on something they have. An Interval International, the users have a password committed to memory and the users are provided with a RSA security token where they have a number key that changes regularly. For a user to gain access to an Interval system from the Internet, the user is prompted for a user identification, a password, and the number from the RSA security token. This dual factor authentication approach lessons the risk of unauthorized access since an intruder would need to have a matching password and token.

The last recommendation that I would make is for the company to sign up for an annual penetration test. This test is where the company grants a third party the authority to attempt to breach the security and gain access to the companies systems. These tests use known vulnerabilities and provide the company with the findings and actions to improve security. This type of testing is required by the Payment Card Industry/Data Security Standard (PCI/DSS) if the company is a credit card processing company.

Conclusion

A silver bullet doesn't exist for Internet Security. The basic building blocks of an Internet Security solution are a hardware based firewall and an antimalware solution. These two solutions are only as good as their upkeep. Internet threats change rapidly and in order to ensure that the company remains protected from new threats a comprehensive patch management practice must be implemented. Remote users will need to access company assets. In order to ensure that the appropriate users gain access, the company should invest in a two factor authentication solution. Lastly, having a third party double check the security is never a bad idea. This can be done with penetration testing and is a requirement for PCI/DSS compliance.

Impact of Facebook Over Society

One might say that it is an age of information technology, but it will not be unfair to replace the term with social networking to a huge extent over sophisticated computer networks using internet protocol around the globe. Such as Facebook is the one most visited and acknowledged social network among others like MySpace, orkut etc supervised by few of the most elegant IT companies. Facebook among them is having immense amount of effect over society.

1 2 Impact

I am going to discuss few of its positive and negative effects below.

1 2 Impact

Essence of being not solitary

Firstly, people don't feel worry about being solitary any more, since they have their profiles over Facebook. This is kind of an online real time community centre where they meet many people each day, and share things with them. Most importantly with Facebook they have choice of selection among people whom they want to be their friends or not. It is creating more opportunities to know about people in general around the globe their mentality and a chance of getting to know about different cultures by visiting their profiles and interacting with them. It creates big time social awareness about the matters going around the globe.

Social awareness

While they are interacting with people more and more every time they log in to Facebook, they find updated news of events everyday, which makes them to know about what is happening in their neighborhood or even at the other corner of the earth. It is shaping lives of people in a way such as creating mutual understanding about many events and issues of society.

By a long way Facebook is probably the one source which is dominating about creating social awareness among people about the facts of society on issues which people are unable to discuss by sitting beside them, while they are busy in their jobs. Newly improved features and options at Facebook even allow them to have conference talks and mutual share of information.

Overwhelming Teenage Involvement

With lots of positive facts, it also contains negative aspects as well. What is most problematic is that teenagers are spending their too much time over Facebook. Well, who knows they are interacting right kind of people or not..? It is a point to consider while allowing young boys and girls to use such social networking websites like Facebook. Every society contains black sheep in it. So, it is really hard to judge among so many people, especially when they are dealing with millions of them instead of few hundreds. This creates uncertain amount of changes in general behavior of children when they have no check over their activities.

A very dangerous fact of the moment is that these sites can expose their privacy and they could get in any sort of trouble. A personal observation is that there is an increased amount of users with the age less than 16. Children without understanding about such risks mentioned above post their personal details, and anyone can access their address, phone numbers and pictures, which could be used for any purpose of some criminal`s choice.

Abatement of Value and Activities

What I am going to say now might not be considered a real time effect of Facebook over society, but believe me soon you will see it in a larger aspect of life, where we talk about social values and worldly activities. This social network has increased such a huge choice of friends that people are not even bothered of loosing friends anymore. I mean if you think it carefully, then you get to know that not long before people were always careful about their friends, and used to take care of issues which might not hurt them. But now nothing is more precious to them than Facebook, not even their closest friends. They are trying to protect their Facebook accounts more than friends, because they know if they lose one today, they will have double amount next day.

People used to talk about excessive use of internet creating fewer amounts of worldly activities and real time social interaction to people directly. This is no wonder anymore that children of this age are more attracted to social networking websites like Facebook then walking with friends, playing outside, which is cause of their being naive to other physical sports. I am mentioning this fact keeping in mind that there is a huge amount of young children using Facebook, and when they are stuck over internet for longer than they are supposed to then certainly it creates unexpected changes in them, which were prevented by healthy activities at every stage of age in the world before the introduction of such social networks.

Confusion of Conclusion

Well what should one expect me to say in conclusion to my talk above..? It is tough to put a final verdict over its positivity or negativity, because its long term true colors and effects are yet to be revealed, not by their inventors, but users themselves. Whatever are the positives there are always negatives points of good things as well. But for the present time one can say that it is a point of interaction and getting to know about a wider aspect of culture of different civilization of the world, yet with room of improvement.

For example, this site should not be allowed to children under a certain age, and over use of anything is hazardous and same is the case with social networking sites, where they often do some silly mistakes like disclosing their privacy to people, whom they haven't even seen once in life. Remain as reserved as they can, and be careful while selecting their list of connections with groups or friends. Good things certainly come out with good if we do good use of them.

Bullpen Catchers - How They Impact a Baseball Game and the Team

Bullpen catchers are the men in a baseball game who have the responsibility of warming up relief pitchers in the bullpen. Most of these catchers are anonymous to baseball fans and the sports media, never get a baseball card made of them (even when the mascot sometimes does!), yet they impact the overall experience at a baseball game in ways most people do not recognize. While their primary duty is to warm up relief pitchers during a game, there are many other things bullpen catchers do to while serving in what some consider to be a "thankless" role for the team. Here are just a few things they do to contribute:

1 2 Impact

Many teams carry only two catchers, with another fielder being the "emergency" catcher. Ideally the manager of the team wants to have all of his reserve catchers ready to be used in case of pinch hitting, pinch running (although there are VERY few catchers who are used as pinch runners!), injuries, or simply helping the pitching coach evaluate a pitcher's performance. The bullpen catcher frees up the manager to keep all of his catchers available to be used during a game by replacing the need for one of the reserve catchers to be in the bullpen. Occasionally the bullpen catcher will be called into duty before a game to catch the Opening Pitch by the honored person. Often, he is called to escort and warm up that person to make sure that he or she makes a decent attempt at throwing in front of the crowd. During pre-game batting practice the bullpen catcher will share the load with the other catchers of warming up pitchers who need to throw on their respective "off days." Every pitching coach gives his pitchers a specific throwing schedule and routine. It is in these practice sessions that pitchers work on their mechanics and fine tune their deliveries. Other exercises include the "Towel Drills", "Flat Tosses", "Long Tosses", and other exercises specific to pitchers. After working with the pitchers, many bullpen catchers are then asked to throw the remaining part of batting practice or work with the hitters on "Flip Toss" or other hitting drills. A bullpen catcher, if he has caught for many years, also can be a de-facto "psychologist" in the bullpen. Relief pitchers have the stereotype of being crazy, mentally unbalanced, etc. While this is not necessarily a true stereotype - although I have met my share of a few wild men in the bullpen (!) - the ability for a pitcher to trust his bullpen catcher's feedback is an important part of a pitcher being ready to enter a game. Barry Zito and Huston Street, in an August 2006 article by an MLB.com writer, are cited as trusting the experience of their bullpen catcher in order to help them get ready (http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060817&content_id=1615561&vkey=news_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak) In between innings, if the bullpen is located along the foul lines of the field, will often warm up one of the outfielders. Two balls are carried by the outfielders in between innings, and one is shared between two of the outfielders to stay loose. The other is tossed between the left fielder (or right fielder depending on which side the bullpen is located) and the bullpen catcher to help the outfielder stay loose. If a bullpen is located along the foul lines, and one of the other catchers is catching a particular pitcher, the bullpen catcher will stand behind the pitcher to protect him in case of a hard line drive hit toward the bullpen.A bullpen catcher may also serve in multiple roles off the field:

1 2 Impact

Give post-game lessons for kids when the other players are in the clubhouse. Appear in uniform for various local charity events or events with emphasis for kids. Help the team with its marketing efforts, especially in the lower levels of the minor leagues. Work with the pitching coach to determine ways to help pitchers improve. Help set up the locker room before opening day. Yes, this actually does happen! Help the general manager with on-field and off-field promotionsIn all, the bullpen catcher does a tremendous amount of unrecognized work. Furthermore, he sometimes ends up catching (and returning) more pitches and warm-up throws (between pre-game practice and in the bullpen) than the starting catcher does! If you want to make a player's day, find out who your team's bullpen catcher is, send him an autograph request, and chances are you will get one back faster than any other request. And if you happen to meet your team's bullpen catcher in July, August, or September please remember that it may take him a few extra seconds to raise his arm to shake your hand. All those throws do take a toll!

How Mahogany Hurricane Impact Exterior Doors Can Do More For Your Home Decor

As more and more people choose to add impact doors to their homes in major hurricane zones across Florida, Caribbean Islands and other coastal outlying states, so do the home decor aspect of decorating the front part of their homes. With modern manufacturing techniques, mahogany impact entry doors now can be manufactured with impact glass, wood hand-carvings, decorative wrought iron grills and even in contemporary modern type door designs.

1 2 Impact

Right after hurricane Andrew destroyed Homestead, Florida and other cities around South Florida and created billions of dollars in damages, Miami-Dade County knew they had to come up with a more stricter building codes so these kind of disasters wouldn't create the billions of dollars in damages again. At first, the need was to build and test impact exterior doors with one simply purpose and that was to protect the interior of the homes from wind and water. So a mandatory building code was put in place that all new construction and remodeling of homes and commercial buildings in the State of Florida shall adhere to the new building codes which require impact exterior doors, windows and garage doors.

1 2 Impact

At first, the impact exterior doors were just basic one light French doors or plain looking aluminum or metal doors. However, home owners wanted a choice and more design to the front impact doors. Now, the mahogany impact wood doors allow such anathetics to be accomplished. No matter if you want 10' arched mahogany doors with let's say custom hand-carving, it can now be manufactured in impact rated form because the mahogany impact doors will still have the three-point or five-point multi-locking system to brace the door for extra security but yet, you still have the beautiful wood doors that you dreamed of.

Even the multi-point lock system handles are becoming more and more decorative keeping home owners in mind. There are a lot of points why you should have impact entry doors. Looks, protection and security are three main sources of the extra benefits of mahogany impact doors. So remember, when you're shopping for mahogany impact doors, you now know that you can have wrought ironwork, art glass or even custom carved wood doors as a option for impact front doors.

The Impact of Health Care Reform on Flexible Spending Accounts

The recent passage of Health Care Reform legislation will affect virtually every American in one way or another. Among many other health care benefits, regulations for Flexible Spending Accounts have also been altered by Health Care Reform.

1 2 Impact

Children up to Age 26

1 2 Impact

1. There is a requirement for group health insurance plans to cover children up to age 26. This requirement applies to plan years that begin on or after September 23, 2010. Plans that run on a calendar year, as most do, would not have to begin covering these young adults until January 1, 2011.

2. Effective March 30, 2010 parents can now use their Flexible Spending Accounts to pay for medical expenses for their children regardless of tax dependency status, as long as the child does not reach age 27 in that tax year. With employer approval, employees can now increase contributions to their flexible spending accounts midyear to pay for medical expenses for their dependents up to 26 years old.

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicine

OTC medicine is still eligible, however, effective January 1, 2011, a prescription or letter of medical necessity will be required for OTC medicines to be reimbursed through an FSA, HRA or HSA. OTC items such as insulin, contact lens solution, bandages and durable medical equipment will continue to be covered without a prescription. A copy of BASIC's Letter of Medical Necessity form can be found by clicking here.

Contribution Limit

For tax years beginning after 12/31/2012, annual Health FSA contributions will be capped at ,500. Starting in 2014, this contribution limit will increase each year to adjust for inflation.
